FOUNDER & Executive

Dr. Vanetta R. Rather

Dr. Vanetta Rather is a speaker, teacher, author, radio/podcast host and a fierce advocate for women and girls.  She is the founder of My Sister My Seed, Inc., a 501c3 non-profit with a mission to, “Create a safer and a more just world for women and girls.”  Dr. Rather established My Sister My Seed to fight Sex Trafficking and to empower women and girls.

Born in Newport News, VA and raised in the inner city of SE, Washington, DC, Dr. Rather knows what it’s like to experience both love and lack. She is proud of the roots from which she hails as they have helped give her the determination to persevere and pursue purpose with passion. Her desire to live her purpose and to help others do the same is a direct reflection of the family and community in which she was raised.

Dr. Rather graduated Magna Cum Laude from Springfield College in Springfield, MA, with a Bachelor of Science in Human Service.  She also earned a Master of Divinity Degree and a Doctor of Ministry Degree, with a concentration in Preaching in the 21st Century, from the Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC. Dr. Rather is very passionate about preaching and she uses her passion to spread an empowering message of self-love, self-worth, and value to all, especially women and girls who are too often marginalized, left out, and left behind.

Her work speaks for itself and has garnered Dr. Rather awards and acknowledgments including the Eboné Image Award from the National Coalition of One Hundred Black Women, Inc., as well as an acknowledgment from the Former Lt. Governor of the State of Maryland and now Congressman, Anthony G. Brown.

Dr. Rather penned two books, All the Single Ladies: Modern Single & Faithful and Defiant Women of Faith: A 52 Week Devotional for women seeking to live authentically free.  She is also the host of the weekly talk radio show, Defiant Women Win, which airs on WERA 96.7 FM in the Washington, Metropolitan Area.

Dr. Rather desires women of faith to break the bonds of cultural and faith traditions that hinder women and keep them living beneath who God created them to be.

Using her advocacy work and her skills as a homiletician, Dr. Rather is extremely grateful and honored to fulfill her life’s mission to build the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in Heaven.
